Carbon Fiber
How can I build a Carbon Fiber bicycle?

I am looking for books, manuals, classes, apprenticeships, or anything that could teach me from the ground up on how to build carbon fiber bicycles. I have the knowledge of custom fitting and frame jigs. I took a course on building custom steel bicycles, but I would like to be able to work worth both.

I have the knowledge of custom fitting and frame jigs. I took a course on building custom steel bicycles, but I would like to be able to work worth both.

I have only built a few steel frames, mainly for practice though one of them I actually ride.
Alum. is one of the materials I will be learning soon, but I have yet to build a complete frame with it yet, just minor practice material. Alum, Steel, and Ti are all metals I can find information on or take courses on, but I have yet to find somewhere to learn how to work with Carbon.

Well, then you know that aluminum takes significant post treatment after welding, right? And Ti takes a surgically clean environment to avoid weld contamination and failure… but thats not your question…

Anyway, you need to forget most of what you know about building bikes when working with carbon fiber. The best way to learn the “nuts and bolts” is to read up on fiberglas layups. This is similar to carbon fiber techniques. Once you learn about fiberglas and thermosets and the technique then you can worry about laminar directions and stuff.

It takes me about 2 years to design, prototype and prepare a CF design for production. Unlike fiberglas, CF is strong in one direction but very weak in another so positioning the cloth is a critical undertaking. Epoxy/thermoset content is another key consideration as is using metal reinforcements and tidbits where necessary.

Some have apparently had some success in carving a foam “core” then laying CF over it but I am not so convinced this is the best idea in the world due to the amount of clean up time you would need and the possibility of the glue attacking and deforming the foam before it is set. This “core” process is one that was culled from doing fiberglas, by the way.

Good luck!

EDIT: By the way, don’t confuse the term “composite” with “carbon fiber”.. they are not interchangable. The term “composite” refers to a combination of different materials to make another material that displays the characteristics of all. Bread is a composite, and so is Cheez Whiz and even steel….
